PRJ3.30-32 by seangordonmurphy PRJ3.30-32 by seangordonmurphy
Here's a spread from Punk Rock Jesus #3.

As an atheist, I wasn't sure about having anything this surreal in the book. I'm not big on hallucinations/magic/dreams in plots, but when it came time to draw this page, I realized that even though I don't believe in angels, my character would.

Also, religious folks have been really kind by embracing the book, and I knew they'd love a scene like this.

I thought she was hallucinating the whole time, even with the marks i sorta figured that whatever really happened, what we see is just how she pieced things together. Still, after watching Lost, i learned to really appreciate when writers leave some open ended details and blur a few lines.

this is probably my favorite spread of the whole arc!  the emotion, the action, and the kick A design of the angel is ridiculous!

Im not religious at all but I thought this whole scene was very powerful. I really loved the character of Gwen and felt so sorry for her!
Powerful character writing!

I'm was actually slightly confused after the book ended, because I thought this actually happened. Especially since she saw the grip marks on her shoulders.

Characters have a lot of hallucinations in the book, just like in real life. I think many people were hoping they amounted to something more, but no. :)

yeah i honestly did hope that angel was real since the design was cool and it meant that she was being watched over. Any chance of a McKael solo mini? Or maybe one day you'll do some work on the punisher?

Though an atheist, the artist side is always for art is does give a shit about beliefs, right?I think the important thing here is that people can believe in your art work, and you made good on it,I mean,I'm not much of a God-fearing guy but these pages draw me in as an artist enjoying another artists' very good work. Existing or not, it's always pretty cool seeing some something shaping up through art.

And it turn around for the good I see, thats great Sean.

I must say your design of this angel is something else I have a few angels I've drawn and the fact that the trinity symbols are there placed resemble each other. but like always great work. the issues are great

Thanks for noticing! That symbol is the seal of god or something I found online. Don't really remember, but the trinity theme is there. :)

I've been very curious about this series and very interest in gettin my hands on a copy because I love punk rock, I love your sicktastic art, and I love jesus (no lie), but I must say that your assessment of us "religious" folks is most likely accurate because this page is probably the coolest I'VE seen from the books so far.

and freakin wing scabbards.. brilliance!

Sean, I know you've heard this a million times but your work blows me away. Your ability to capture motion in the most fluid and realistic way as well as your camera angles and ability to tell a story are just, in a word; wonderful.
It's a treat to see you create.

This moment just turned everything up to 11! It's such a beautiful spread and the design for the Angel is fantastic I'm curious to see some concept and process stuff. The Angel's strong movements in the panels really make my eyes slam into each frame as I follow. The CATCH! sound effect is glorious as well :D

one the coolest pages in a great issue. i really like seeing chars in free fall reminds me of sketches from an Alphonse Mucha book when he drew female nudes reclining without the bed made it look like like they were falling also saw a great exhibit of Klimt drawings that had a similar feel. great work with PRJ.

That's not an angel, it's the 'No-Cider fairy'.
In the last panel he's having a go at her for giving him a Strongbow-
"Bitch, I asked for a Stout!"

If Im allowed the appreciation, Id say that the angel fits the story really well. Youre doing a sci-fi story, so its understandable that you push some boundaries a little bit; like an angel working for a big company as an agent. The page reads beautifully, btw.
Kudos, man :)

Amazing.

I was so inmersed in her jump that I was genuinely blown away by the coming the angel, and when I was sure (and 'Preacher' surprised) this had gotten really biblical, you pulled the classic 'it was just a dream'. And yet I fell completely for it, silly post catholic raised atheist of me.

The design of the angel is simply awesome. I loved the swords in his wings.

Thanks! The whole "it was just a dream" can be tricky, so I added the bruises on her arms to it hinted that maybe it was real/maybe not.

That angel screams anime on only the best levels. Hardcore.

As a god-believer, non-religious person (I'd say "spiritual" but I seem to get lots of flack for that), I'm really loving PRJ. You definitely paint some extremes, but I'm holding out for the tasty grey areas. And the art, hey. =)

I love the page but your comments are dumb. I don't believe in magic, dwarves, wizards, elves, aliens, ancient mythical beings- but i can still draw them and write about them... You just wanted everyone to know you're an Athiest for the attention.

I wrote the book, and people asked about why I'd write about angels if I didn't believe in them, so I answered. BTW, everyone on DA is essentially looking for attention.

I think the strength of any writer is their ability to put themselves in the shoes of characters they could never otherwise identify with. As an atheist myself, I find I can really enjoy stories with religious characters and themes, as long as the story does not simply become an editorial, and the characters mouthpieces, for the author's personal politics. I know that Tolkien was averse to allegory because of those tendencies specifically, and it was his primary criticism of C.S. Lewis' work, in spite of their friendship. Tolkien himself was deeply religious, but he didn't feel that his stories should simply be a means of transmitting his ideas.

I suppose my point is, good. I see writers every day who can't resist the temptation to insert themselves in their stories, even at the expense of the narrative. The characters we create should be their own people.

On another note, that city looks amazing. There's so much detail in these scenes. I love it. It's easy to get lost just trying to take in all the details in your pages, but they still all flow really well.
