Spawn cover by seangordonmurphy Spawn cover by seangordonmurphy
Colored by Matt Hollingsworth. Copyright Todd McFarlane.

When one of my childhood art heroes called me up last summer, I did my best not to geek out on the phone. He wanted a Spawn cover for issue 250, so I jumped at the chance to work with him. I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before, so I went with this extremely unusual idea of Spawn celebrating his 250th drinking coffee in hell. Here's a walk through:

-The bridge you're seeing is the one from It's a Wonderful Life where George Bailey tries to kill himself. It's a super weird Easter egg, but it sort of fits.
-The diner on the side was a way to get 3 of Spawn's original villains into the cover: Violator and Overkill being served coffee by Satan.
-It's snowing in hell and it's 666 degrees.
-I found a way to fit Sam and Twitch in there, along with a 1980s police cruiser.
-the first version didn't have the mask rolled up like Spider Man, so I fixed it. Has Todd ever drawn Spidey? He should. ;)
-And, of course, signing my name onto a scroll--the classic 90s accent to any cover.

Spawn looks like he's having a severe case of Batman-Chin-Syndrome.

I do love the composition and the many little details and references. (Is that a reference to Nighthawks in the window?)

Best part is Overtkill at the diner. He can't live without a steady recharge of espresso every few hours.

Depending on whether it'd be stealing the lunch of lessons you run in your apprenticeship courses/or simply if you have the time to do so, but I'd love to read a journal by you on tips for composition and layouts i.e. the balance of perspectives, sizing, themes in this illustration. Please and thank you.

The composition drew me right in, and I have to say I like the colouring as well. It's a strong and fun piece, even though I'm not familiar with Spawn.

That's awesome. Both the drawing and that you get to work childhood heroes like that!

this is wonderful, I love how well you were able to convey the "spawn" feeling, gritty, spawn overlaying and seamlessly fading away into the background... haha even the scroll
todd actually did do spiderman for a bit, and as you can imagine it turned out to be some of the most bad ass issues in SM's history.

Awesome man. Always fantastic. Sounds like you had a lot of fun doing it too.

Also, Todd's Spidey was one of my favorite all time runs. So weird and lenky! And this image... ICONIC.

I guess I know which cover I'll be picking up when I head to the shop. I haven't read the series in years, but 250 is a huge Milestone. I've got nothing but respect for McFarlane, and Larsen on Savage Dragon.

I love the classic approach to the piece; the classic Spawn costume, the core 'villians', and the signature scroll.  All very cool.

I think one of the biggest appeals in your art is the level of detail; mainly the easter egg references.  It's shows a level of commitment that some artists just won't make (whether deadline or other).  A bridge in the piece, there's quite a few artists that would just say here's a generic bridge; you actually take the time to find a specific bridge to use as a teaser to those looking for your easter eggs.

Question: the diner with the 'villians', a reference to Hopper's Nighthawk piece?

Thanks man! Great point about the Nighthawks part--never thought of that. Must have been sub conscious or something. :)

The edgy inking and a bit weird composition + Matt's new colouring technique with the textures and splatters reminds me of the Ashley Wood's Hellspawn which is an Easter egg  at it's own ;) no matter if it's intentional or not ! Great work !
