REJECTED Batman story by seangordonmurphy REJECTED Batman story by seangordonmurphy

My 8 pages of Batman Black and White come out next week in issue #1! And my friend John Arcudi wrote me a great script to go along with it. So check it out next Wednesday. And there's even a cover with my statue design on it! I'm really thankful to DC for all they've done for me. Hopefully this post will help sell the book more.

A little inside info.........

About a year ago, I pitched my own story that got rejected. And to be honest, I was 90% sure it was going to be rejected. And you can see why. The editor is a friend whom I respect greatly, so I took a chance and sent him this. An 8 page Batman story doesn't come around very often, and because many of the stories tend to be "Elseworld" like, I didn't think there would be any harm in trying to do something COMPLETELY different.

To be clear, "Batman: The Animated Series" is a huge influence on me. I respect Batman A LOT. And I love the movies. But it's always so serious, and Batman is always so sad, I thought we could use some tongue-and-cheek. So I drew this up, and I laughed out loud the whole time. Even re-reading it now, I laughed.

The editor's reply was priceless. He said something like, "Brilliant. But you know I can never publish this. Also, what's the matter with you?" That's when I grabbed Arcudi to write something for me, because each time I tried to write something else, I ended up thinking, "Bruce would be WAY happier if he just offed everyone in Arkham!"

OH WOW! that is a quite a refreshing idea, i am a huge Batman fan and really enjoy your work, I'm grateful you were willing to share this with us. I know it will never be published but at least I can see it here! very funny story by the way.

Oh my god, this made my night! XD Though I have mixed feelings about not seeing Scarecrow in this. Relieved because he doesn't die onscreen (still a little sore about what happened to him in Injustice), but at the same time, missed out on your gorgeous artwork of him.

Ah, well. The hilarity of the overall sequence makes up for it. I think the, "Bye, Harvey. Bye, Two-Face." made me laugh the hardest. And then I got to the explosion, and topped it off with the "Two points!" I don't think my sides will recover for a while; great job!

That is awesome! Really well-paced, and the dialogue is really funny and well-written! I think DC shoulda been a little more brave and published this.

I  know Batman is "supposed" to be brooding and whatnot but it gets kinda old. Great art btw.

Well, not all stories come to fruition. But there is always hope. Maybe some day, in some fashion, the storie will be  fully published.

I played Arkham Assylum, and i thought so many times how more efficient would be batman with a bazooka and a flamethrower..... an now you draw this!

Now, for me Batman is the best character of DC, but hes so soft an sad sometimes; this way would be easier; great plot even if it never is published, maybe you should complete it as a short personal work or webcomic here in DA

seangordonmurphy Featured By Owner Sep 4, 2013
Okay...THAT part would have had to change. :)

I love it! I wish this could see print even if it was like Alfred waking Wayne up from a dream at the end or something. This would be a really fun " what if" kind of book. I would love to see all the essential Sequential guys  doing their less serious takes on mainstream characters, Now that's a book I wanna buy!

Right on! That is rad.

The lack of this common sense approach is why I stopped reading a lot of comics. My issues with most characters and story lines was with insane power creep. When a character like Magneto can essentially just hold the world hostage by making changes that have an effect at a global scale and he doesn't even have to like kidnap someone or anything, then that motherfucker needs to die or he needs to win. All dramatic tension is completely sucked away unless the editorial and writing staff starts to pull the trigger on that shit for real. The same goes for awesomely indestructible Wolverine, Dr. Strange, Superman, Thanos, Darkside; characters that are approaching god like power need to win or die.  Batman, Ironman, Spiderman need to completely loose their shit from the stress and retire or become the villain. When you start to pay attention to how, violence and other stresses effect people in the real world it becomes way less possible, at least for me, to take any story seriously after a certain point. I was bummed when Hellboy kind of disappeared from his books for a while but it kind of made sense, he was burned out so he went walk about, and the writing staff got the opportunity to play with new characters and story lines.

Like in your 8 pages here, it would be awesome if Bats did that , but in my mind there would be no happy ending. It would then be a tearful stand off with Gordon and Gotham Police at the gates of a burning Arkham and then Bruce eating a bullet. That is way less fun and would never happen but that is also why I haven't reliably picked up a spandex book in like 15 years. I am far from mature but I do have some fucking taste and most books don't put as much thought and story arc into a 100 issue run as you just did in 8 pages, satirical or not.

Holy crap I'm laughing my butt off! I love your art style but I just pictured this whole thing done by Bruce Timm with Kevin Conroy's voice narrating it, pure brilliance Sean, bravo sir, would love to see this come to life, even if it just ended up being an extra on one of the animated dvd's some day!
