Jobar cover 5 by seangordonmurphy Jobar cover 5 by seangordonmurphy
Drawn by me and colored by Dave Stewart. My editor isn't sure that the white space is reading as "water" and "reflection", so we may go back and hit it with a little blue.

But this is my favorite cover so far. Not much to it, but I like how the directionals of the chain worked out in that they really isolate Joe.

The beauty of the line makes the few seconds needed to fully understand it a time well spend.

muy bueno

I absolutely love this! I didn't realise it was a reflection at first, but I thought it was an Escher style impossible scene with Joe and the Armoured bloke on two separate planes merged into one. The reflection doesn't make sense - that's not what you'd see from that angle, but that takes absolutely nothing away from how utterly gorgeous the image is. FAVE+

really wonderful work.

it may have been said, but I think there is something to be said for an image like this, which is so high quality, where it makes you take a second to figure out what is happening. I love that about it, and only because its so well done, is that a good aspect of it.

awesome work.
jakkass Featured By Owner Mar 22, 2010
fuck it i think its great, the water is obviously reflecting a white raining sky. doesnt need any blue at all.
RenieDraws Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
I can actually see it redaing with some green in teh water, and of course a rippling green with some white dropped in for the sky/clouds. Maybe I'm just complicating things, though :/
J-m-T Featured By Owner Mar 16, 2010
Love the composition. The blacks create a really interesting overall shape and frame, and the chains help to draw the eye to Joe. Can't wait to see more!
bearmantooth Featured By Owner Mar 11, 2010
I'm sure other people have said it, but maybe a slight fade of the black on the reflection of the statue's upper torso, head, and arm might help. Keep the blacks for where the figures are. This might help give it the depth and surface difference it needs to read as water.

Besides that it's freakin' great and ambitious. Probably one of my favorite pieces of art from you.
linemonkey Featured By Owner Mar 7, 2010
yeah it really confused me at first. It's hard to tell what is a reflection and what isnt. Another way to fix it would be maybe line holds on the reflection.
Looks badass though!

freaky awsome !

Maybe try something like this so you dont have to color in all that great negative space.

Silly editors,

Katchzen Featured By Owner Mar 6, 2010
I agree. Maybe not quite that transparent, but anything is better than ruining all that space.
Strategem Featured By Owner Mar 5, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
I dunno: I think the strong blacks there are a big part of what makes the image. They help isolate Joe too.
RKDNStudios Featured By Owner Mar 5, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
Right...I agree.

But if the editor is going to make him change it I would rather see the "reflections" opacity changed just a bit than have all that great negative space colored blue.

Just my two cents.

But yeah...I would vote to leave it exactly how the artist and colorist deem.

Great work man! I'm really loving what your doing on this cover. The use of negative space & contrast really makes it stand out. I think its cool that it takes a few seconds to get what is going on... it makes the audience linger and really absorb the moment.

Very awesome.

Your composition is always solid, but the minimalism of the water really pushes it over the edge for me. I took me a second to read the white space as water, but I think I prefer the ambiguity.

Nah...white looks quite well, you don't need to be a genius to realize that is water. Oops I think I have to read the previous comments before I comment myself...but what the hell, I just took the time writing this so you are gonna have to read it hahaha just joking, keep it up!

amazing idea and realization. I agree with the ones saying the chain should me a little bigger :)
MicahJGunnell Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2010  Professional Filmographer
Very cool...I don't know if someone else already mentioned this, but I think maybe the non-reflection chain should be a little bit bigger...Right now its approximately the same size as the reflection, and this makes it not seem like a reflection. But I don't think you should make the water blue...It would change everything...
artsora Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2010
Wow! I hope you don't change the color into blue. I think it would lose the Contrast effect and turn into a "boring" normal piece.
With the Water "colored" white you have to look at it more than once and for me, this is what a picture makes "WOW"

I feel a little influence of Mike Mignola in your work (my opinion)...anyway, i like it a lot! God atmosphere! :)
lesniak Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
I think this cover has a mystery. if you explain too much by adding blue, or something, it will loose it. It is cool that it isn't understandable at first look. Watcher has to look closer and longer to see what it really is. And that is the role of the cover to take attention.

Sorry for my english.

I missed the first 2 issues so I'll wait until this is out in trade, but this cover is very cool.

mate really, you are so talented, wickedly talented!

Smexy-Zexy Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010
I like the white. Personally, I like the way the cover was coloured. I think if blue is added to the cover, then everything might get a little lost and not stand out so much as it does against the white. But that's just my really silly opinion, lol.

Also- I agree about the chains. The statue and swirls are also really freakin' awesome too :)

This is perfect, don't add anything. Art should not be spoon fed.
RemingtonVeteto Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010  Professional
I think you can color hold the blacks in the reflection with a blue or even a dank green. The notes of flora tell me this is swampy-ish water, so I kinda wonder where the drab colors are.

This may have been said somewhere in the comments, but if it has, I second it.

hafta agree with changing the colour or just parts of it so it translate more clearly.

Love it. I think a slight fading transparency from the bottom would help, but it didn't take me long to realize what I was looking at.

arghatron Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010
I actually really liked the fact that at first you don't notice it is a reflection. You're sort of drawn 'Joe?', at first and as you look around his situation is revealed to you. It's like a mini story!

I don't think it's the white that makes you lose the sense of reflection, it's more the lack of reflection from the guys in the water but I like it!
