Hellblazer COD cover 3 process by seangordonmurphy Hellblazer COD cover 3 process by seangordonmurphy
Here's something for all you process junkies.

1. sketch for my editor to approve.
2. Photo of my girlfriend and I for reference (set the camera timer and RUN to pose with her).
3. block out the shapes and figure out the blacks on a separate piece of crap paper.
4. pencil on the good stuff.
5. ink with brush and quill and then adjust the image in PS.
6. hit a pub and get hammered (not shown here).

Thank you for posting this - its really interesting to see a process that is not totally digital here for once. Abnd I have to say I think the end result looks better for it. I find it interesting how you changed the balance of light and dark from the photo quite significantly in the third stage to make the final image more dramatic.

I feel like step 6 is the most important step in your process and it's often overlooked. Step 7- wake up in bed with shoes on feet, but laces untied should also be added.

I do have a question actually, since after watching some of your video tutorials on youtube i got really excited about the depth and possibilities of inking.

How much would you say you use the quill versus using a brush? It's more a curiosity since what you may be comfortable could be different from what I would be comfortable with, but as an overall is there certain parts you would draw with quill only or vice versa?

50/50 I'd say. More quill on mechanical objects.
